Client: Syarikat Air Melaka Berhad
Project Duration: 6 months (Completed on February 2020)
Location: Pulau Besar, Melaka
SOW: Engineering Design, Supply & Install (Turnkey Project) with deferred payment (within 3 years)
Pulau Besar is an island in Malacca, Malaysia and is located approximately 5km from mainland Malacca. Syarikat Air Melaka Berhad (SAMB) is responsible to supply treated water from the mainland to the island via submarine pipe.
The transfer system and piping were maintained by SAMB at some cost incurred for repair or maintenance. When there were pipe leakages incidents happened, treated water is being supplied using barge with minimal capacity. Therefore, there is a need to have a water treatment plant at the island to minimize the downtime and cost to supply the water to the island.
AIRB scope of work for this project is Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning (EPCC) of seawater desalination water treatment plant using Membrane Technology. This is a fast-track project where AIRB has delivered the Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) water treatment plant with treated water capacity up to 25m3/hour or 500 m3/day and treated water quality comply with Ministry of Health (MOH) drinking water standards.
The system was designed in a modular, containerized system where it allows easy transportation, quick installation and requires small footprint of the water treatment system and future upgrading. The SWRO system was completed and in operation since February 2020.
The client has enjoyed less water interruption downtime and also more cost-effective method to supply water to the island compared to using barge.
